Utilizing a combination of classroom instruction and hands on practice, students are taught the basics of camera handling and setup. The fundamentals of exposure, and using shutter speeds and apertures as they pertain to crime scenes are reinforced. Advanced topics cover digital workflow, chain of custody, and tire track & footwear impressions.

Forensic Infrastructure

An introductory class designed for agencies, departments and evidence photographers, making the transition from traditional film based photography to digital imaging.

Forensic Basic Photography

Students will review and practice the basics of exposure and camera handling techniques as they pertain to forensic photography.

Forensic Advanced Photography

The difference between a snap shooter and a photographer is knowledge of the craft. Students will learn how to dramatically improve the quality of their images through proper white balance and file type selection. Chain of custody, basic standard operating procedures (SOP) and digital workflows will be addressed as well.

Forensic Camera Configuration

Learn the recommended settings for optimizing digital cameras for Forensic image capture. An emphasis will be made on producing quality finished files directly in the camera, minimizing the possibility of defense challenges. Another benefit is a reduction of post-processing time.

Forensic Lighting

In this workshop, students will learn how to use a variety of lighting techniques for documenting a crime scene.

1. Proper use of Speedlights (flash) both on camera and off.
2. Balancing ambient light and flash exposures.
3. Photographing large scale nighttime crime scenes, by painting with Speedlights and spotlights. Basic close up lighting.

Forensic Close Up Photography

1. A presentation on close up techniques and tools to document fingerprints, footwear, and tire track impressions.
2. How to select and position scales.
3. Leveling cameras to reduce axial distortion.

Forensic Camera Maintenance

A course on the proper care of your digital equipment. Learn the correct methods for cleaning dust off the sensor. Prevent electronic failures with contact maintenance, and increase the lifespan of your batteries.

Schedule:

• Monday 9:00am to 5:00pmclassroom and outdoor instruction.
• Tuesday1:00pm to 9:00pminside and outside hands on instruction with light painting after dark.
  Note: you will need to bring appropriate clothing for the outside conditions rain or snow.
• Wednesday 9:00amto 5:00pmhands on workshop instruction inside and outside.
