The FUJIFILM X-T4 Extended Spectrum (ES) Infrared Mirrorless Camera has been redesigned and adapted for infrared image capture, making it a versatile device that integrates advanced still and video capabilities with improved workflow and assistive features. Equipped with a reliable and highly regarded APS-C-format 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor, the X-T4 excels in high-resolution recording and supports DCI/UHD 4K video at 60 fps, as well as Full HD recording at up to 240 fps. It offers sensitivity ranging from ISO 160 to 12800 and continuous shooting speeds of up to 15 fps using the mechanical shutter. The sensor’s BSI design contributes to reduced noise and enhanced overall clarity, working in conjunction with the X-Processor 4 to deliver rapid performance and improved responsiveness. Furthermore, the sensor’s architecture facilitates a hybrid autofocus system that merges 425 phase-detection points with a contrast-detection system, ensuring swift and precise autofocus performance. Moreover, to enhance all facets of image production, the X-T4 features a 6.5 stop-effective sensor-shift image stabilization system, which minimizes the effects of camera shake with nearly any attached lens.
In addition to its sensor and processor capabilities, FUJIFILM’s cameras are highly regarded for their physical design, with the X-T4 featuring an enhanced design that promotes better handling and shooting efficiency. The camera is equipped with a large, bright 3.69m-dot electronic viewfinder that can be adjusted to a refresh rate of 100 fps, ensuring remarkable smoothness during panning or tracking of subjects. On the other hand, the rear 3.0″ 1.62m-dot touchscreen LCD now incorporates a vari-angle design, making it suitable for shooting from high, low, and front-facing perspectives; it can also be folded against the body when using the EVF. The X-T4 includes dual SD UHS-II memory card slots, providing flexibility for file storage, and it is compatible with the updated, high-capacity NP-W235 battery, which allows for approximately 600 shots per charge. Furthermore, built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functionality facilitates wireless remote control of the camera and enables image sharing to a mobile device.
With an extended photographic range from approximately 350nm to 1000nm, this camera allows for photography in the ultraviolet, visible, and infrared spectrums, providing exceptional photographic versatility.
The X-T4 is centered around a highly adaptable sensor, featuring a 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor in APS-C format. This sensor boasts a back-illuminated design that enables smooth tonal rendering, enhanced low-light performance, and a broad native sensitivity range of ISO 160-12800.
As an X-Trans sensor, it employs a randomized pixel array, which contributes to superior image quality and sharpness by eliminating the need for an optical low-pass filter. Compared to traditional pixel arrangements, the X-Trans configuration more accurately replicates the organic characteristics of film, resulting in subtle colors and tonal transitions while minimizing moir and aliasing.
Additionally, the sensor’s design incorporates an advanced phase-detection autofocus system with 425 selectable points that nearly cover the entire sensor area. This autofocus system provides quicker and more precise focusing performance across various lighting conditions, down to -6 EV. To enhance imaging and focusing capabilities, the camera is also equipped with an updated X-Processor 4, featuring a quad-core CPU that ensures faster and more responsive performance throughout the camera system. This includes a full-resolution shooting rate of 15 fps with the mechanical shutter, 20 fps with the electronic shutter, and a 30 fps rate with the electronic shutter and a 1.25x crop.
The integrated 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization significantly reduces the visibility of camera shake by as much as 6.5 stops. This mechanism operates effectively with the majority of X Series lenses, even those without stabilization features, and is advantageous for capturing images at slower shutter speeds and in challenging lighting situations. Furthermore, 4-axis digital image stabilization can be employed during video recording to enhance the stability of footage, particularly when shooting without a tripod.
Expanding its functionality beyond still images, the X-T4 presents a diverse range of video features, such as internal DCI/UHD 4K recording at a maximum of 60 fps and Full HD recording at up to 240 fps for ultra slow-motion playback. The overall video performance is significantly enhanced by the speed of the X-Processor 4, which facilitates rapid read speeds during video recording and minimizes rolling shutter distortion when capturing moving subjects. Additionally, a micro-HDMI port allows for 10-bit 4:2:2 recording to an optional external recorder.
Moreover, in addition to supporting a 10-bit color depth, the X-T4 is equipped with the F-Log gamma setting, which delivers a flat image suitable for advanced color grading software during post-production. This feature optimizes the potential dynamic range in challenging scenes, and adjustments can also be made to emphasize tone, shadow tone, color, and sharpness.
Furthermore, the camera is equipped with a 3.5mm microphone jack and a 2.5mm remote port, along with an included headphone adapter, providing options for more sophisticated audio solutions.
Taking advantage of FUJIFILM’s vast history in traditional film-based photography, the X-T4 integrates several Film Simulation modes, which mimic the look and feel of some of FUJIFILM’s classic film types:
In addition to simulating specific film types, a Grain Effect mode is also available to replicate the look of old film photos with an organic textured appearance, which is especially noticeable when printing. Color Chrome and Color Chrome Blue effects are also available to deepen color, tonal response, and gradation with higher saturation colors.
