Sigma introduces a new zoom lens designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras, the17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens, which boasts a constant f/1.8 aperture across the entire zoom range. This lens offers optical performance comparable to prime lenses, along with a design and functionality that are conducive to video production. Its wide-to-normal focal range allows for a more lightweight kit bag while maintaining high image quality.

Design and Performance

The lens comprises a total of 17 elements organized into 11 groups, which include four aspherical elements and four Special Low Dispersion elements designed to reduce flare and ghosting while minimizing various aberrations. This configuration results in optical performance that matches or surpasses that of other Sigma Art lenses, such as the 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens. Coupled with its 11-blade rounded diaphragm, the design enhances sharpness and produces a large, smooth bokeh effect when utilized at wide open settings.

In addition to its f/1.8 maximum aperture, the lens also features an 11″ minimum focusing distance throughout the entire zoom range. It achieves a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.8 at its longest focal length, thereby enhancing depth of field and versatility in confined spaces.

Video Production

Engineered specifically for video production, the lens features a bright f/1.8 aperture and a wide-to-normal zoom range, making it an adaptable instrument perfect for single-operator, run-and-gun configurations. An internal zoom mechanism preserves the overall length during operation, facilitating easy balancing on gimbals. Additionally, the design minimizes focus breathing, ensuring smooth transitions throughout the focal range. Sigma’s high-speed, high-response linear actuator autofocus is both silent and precise, while manual focusing has been enhanced with click-and-lock features.
