Advancing into a realm of even greater resolution, the Sony a7R IVA upholds the esteemed lineage of exceptional full-frame cameras, distinguished by remarkable capabilities in both still photography and videography. This fourth iteration of the a7R introduces an enhanced 61MP sensor, coupled with accelerated processing, superior autofocus performance, and a more comprehensive array of features tailored for high-end photographic and video endeavors.
The newly developed full-frame 61MP Exmor R CMOS sensor showcases a back-illuminated design that combines exceptional resolution with remarkable clarity, minimal noise, and an extensive 15-stop dynamic range. Its architecture enhances image quality significantly, while the incorporation of a copper wiring layer substantially boosts data transmission speed, enabling the capture of 14-bit, high-resolution 61MP images. The sensor operates within a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-32000, which can be further extended to ISO 50-102400.
The BIONZ X engine’s rapid image processing capabilities facilitate swift continuous shooting, 4K video capture, and sophisticated autofocus tracking. This efficient processing also minimizes rolling shutter effects and other motion distortions, ensuring clear representation of dynamic subjects.
Regarding shooting speeds, the combination of the sensor and processor allows for continuous shooting at a rate of up to 10 frames per second at full resolution, accommodating as many as 68 consecutive frames while maintaining full-time autofocus and auto-exposure.
This distinctive compositing mode enables the attainment of a resolution that surpasses the capabilities of the 61MP sensor. By collaborating with the sensor-shift image stabilization, this mode shifts the sensor while capturing 16 consecutive images, resulting in approximately 240.8MP of data. This process enhances color accuracy and detail beyond what a single exposure can provide, yielding an impressive image size of 19,008 x 12,672 pixels. Subsequently, these files can be combined in post-production utilizing the Sony Imaging software suite.
The newly enhanced Fast Hybrid AF system incorporates a total of 567 phase-detection points, which effectively cover around 99.7% of the frame’s height and 74% of its width, in conjunction with 425 contrast-detection areas. This combination ensures reliable and rapid autofocus as well as efficient subject tracking capabilities. Furthermore, this focusing system is designed to deliver exceptionally swift performance and dependable tracking, with improved low-light focusing capabilities down to -3 EV.
This advanced focus system also supports a range of focusing functions that enhance precision:
The device supports internal recording of UHD 4K video at various frame rates, reaching up to 30 fps, while utilizing the full sensor width with 8-bit 4:2:0 color sampling through the 100Mbps XAVC S codec. Additionally, oversampled 4K recording is achievable, employing a 6K capture area with a Super 35 crop to enhance detail. This method ensures full pixel readout without pixel binning, resulting in superior image quality with minimized moir and aliasing effects. Furthermore, Full HD 1080p recording is available at frame rates of up to 120 fps. The high-speed recording at 120 fps facilitates 4x and 5x Slow & Quick Motion (S&Q) movie recording, with frame rates adjustable to either 30p or 24p. Alongside high-resolution internal recording, the uncompressed HDMI output allows for the connection of an optional external recorder, enabling clean 4K recording with 4:2:2 sampling. Moreover, 4K video recording provides the capability to capture 8MP still images during playback by extracting a frame from the video and saving it as a distinct file.
The inclusion of HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) support enables the capture of a broad color spectrum, facilitating the creation of HDR-ready content directly from the camera. Additionally, S-Log3 is offered, allowing for the generation of a dynamic range exceeding 14 stops, which enhances grading flexibility particularly in the shadow to mid-tone areas of the image.
The revised OLED Tru-Finder EVF features a resolution of 5.76 million dots, providing bright and clear visuals with exceptional detail. A specialized high-quality setting allows for a refresh rate of 120 frames per second, ensuring particularly fluid playback of dynamic subjects. The 3.0-inch rear LCD, boasting a resolution of 2.36 million dots, incorporates a touch panel for user-friendly operation and precise focusing control. Additionally, the screen can tilt upward by 107 degrees and downward by 41 degrees, facilitating work from both elevated and low perspectives.
The integrated Wi-Fi feature facilitates remote control of the camera and allows for immediate sharing of images to mobile devices for direct online distribution. Additionally, support for both 2.4 and 5 GHz frequency bands enables wireless tethered shooting capabilities. This connectivity further enhances remote camera management. The Imaging Edge mobile application benefits from Bluetooth technology, ensuring a stable connection between the camera and the mobile device. Furthermore, Bluetooth connectivity enables the acquisition of location data.
The a7R IVA is equipped with a highly effective 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system, providing 5.5 stops of compensation for various types of camera shake that may occur during handheld photography and videography. This feature enables users to utilize any lens, including adapted ones, for precise imaging without the risk of blur caused by camera movement.
For longer focal lengths, the stabilization system effectively addresses pitch and yaw adjustments. In contrast, macro and high-magnification photography will benefit from the added horizontal and vertical shift compensation. Additionally, roll compensation is advantageous for all shooting styles. Notably, all five axes of stabilization remain operational at all times, even when utilizing third-party lenses and adapters or lenses that incorporate built-in optical stabilization.
